The art of Chinese fine dining as perfected by the Shangri-La Abu Dhabi Qaryat Al Beri.
Earlier this month we carried the news about the new limited time Supper Club at the Shang Palace, the Chinese fine dining venue at the Shangri-La Abu Dhabi Qaryat Al Beri, and we just had to go give it a try.
Being huge fans of the Shangri-La and their award-winning dining venues, we were sure the Supper Club would be outstanding and happy to say we were spot on, the food was just amazing.
The Shang Supper Club offers discerning diners a carefully curated, limited edition menu which changes every day offering three types of appetizers, a soup, four types of mains and a dessert making it a full meal.
Each day is a different menu featuring the freshest ingredients and you get to try all the house specialties. The food is served in sharing and individual portions and you can order more of anything that takes your fancy, very cool.
The Venue
Those familiar with the Shang Palace will agree it’s a very classy place done up in traditional Chinese style and colors, the gold carpet with the red lanterns, the tables suitably spaced apart with the red mats and the traditional lazy Susan in the middle give it a very intimate dining room sort of vibe.
We are greeted warmly at the door and taken to our table and as we settle down the first cups of tea are being poured, the traditional prawn crackers appear magically and the journey begins.
The Food
We were in on a Wednesday night and the menu featured Cantonese cucumber salad with bean sprouts and carrots, vegetable spring rolls and the classic wrapped chicken with veggies.
The cucumber salad was tart with hints of spice, and we loved how the flavours were just right. The spring rolls were absolutely divine, cooked to perfecting soft and crunchy at the same time with not a trace of oil.
The lettuce wrapped chicken was absolutely on point, the chicken tossed with a variety of veggies had a bit of a zing to it which make every bite a delight.
The soup was wild mushroom, huge chunks of mushrooms in a heaty clear broth delicately flavored, the taste was intense with the deep woody flavor of the mushrooms
It’s time for the mains and there are four of them, first arrives the clay pot sticky beef short ribs superbly presented with a black bean sauce, the meat is fork tender and the taste a perfect blend of sweet and spicy, this was definitely the highlight of the meal, and we had to order a second round.
The Hong Kong style honey soy chicken is absolutely perfect, the chicken has a delicate crunch and the taste is a happy marriage of sweet from the honey and salty from the soy, another superb dish.
A serving of Udon noodles in XO sauce is next the noodles are perfectly cooked and the XO adds its classic taste which pops in your mouth with every bite.
Accompanying this is the last of the mains, wok fried broccoli, which is delicately fried as to retain its colour and texture. Each bite has a satisfying crunch to it and the flavours are exquisite.
The dessert is deep fired sesame dumplings with a sweet soup that has hints of mushroom, which compliments the sesame perfect. The dumplings are crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, a perfect, light dessert to end the meal.
The Verdict
Shang Palace has taken Chinese fine dining to the next level, each dish is perfectly executed, the presentations are simply stunning, and the taste is absolutely divine.
The service is spot on, very attentive and quick, there was nothing we had to ask for and they keep our drinks topped up all the time.
Great ambiance, fantastic food and excellent service are the hallmarks of Shan Palace, and they outdid themselves, serving us one of the best meals we have had there so far.
